The 'symbol of the city' rising and falling 140 metres from Lake Geneva , is the water spout “Jet’Eau”. This started life as the safety valve for a hydraulic plant but is now charged by motor-driven pumps at the rate of 500 litres-per-second, providing onlookers with an indescribable mixture of power and freshness from the droplets and the draughts. The fountain is operational between March and October, and on the odd occasion during the winter months too.
In 1955 the huge Flower Watch was created at the edge of the English Garden. Together with the Jet d’Eau they are the main attractions every year for the tourists visiting Geneva. The Flower Watch is a reminder that Geneva is the birthplace of the Swiss clock and watch-making industry that has become internationally famous, as much through the quality of the watches as through their elegance.
Managed by the 'Service des Espaces Verts et de l’Environnement', and the watch-making society Favag of Neuchâtel, the Flower Watch has the peculiarity to have the world’s longest arm for seconds. It measures 2 metres 50cm. Each second it moves about 27 cm. It was important to consider the slope of the face to assure the preciseness of the watch. Its total circumference is 15,70 metres, and its diameter is 5 metres. For each flower decoration about 6,500 different plants are necessary.
